Here’s a little gift from the world cup for you all from SpitsNieuws (The Dutch equivalent to the Daily Mail on Ketamine).
Holland are through to the semi-final to play either Ghana or Uruguay. Exciting stuff for a Dutchman like me. Holland beat Brazil 2-1 in the quarter finals of this world cup; the first time they beat them since 1974.
My English family are supporting us since their shock defeat against Germany. Hopefully the final will be a Holland – Germany grudge match so my family can feel justified that Germany’s either soundly defeated or that they lost from the current world champions in their 4-1 debacle loss.
The search for extraterrestrial intelligence has been going on since the middle of last century, having been first postulated as a scientific possibility in 1959, but how far have we come and what new things have we learned?
In this Fora.tv lecture Professor Ian Morison discusses Drake’s Equation, Finding life on other planets, SETI@Home and how far we’ve progressed and what we’ve found.
If you’re interested in helping SETI out you can join the SETI@Home’s BOINC project, which will install a screensaver on your computer which will use CPU power when the PC (or Mac or Linux Machine) is idle to help go through the massive amount of data collected by the radio telescopes mentioned in the lecture. There’s even an 3nglish.co.uk SETI group you can join (search for 3nglish.co.uk when prompted to join a group).
Merry Christmas you tossers! Ok, I’m a bit late! So sue me.
I’ve had a nasty cold for 5 days and I haven’t been able to get an internet connection in the house I’ve been staying at for days to boot. Not a good Christmas for me. Anyway, I’m back in the land of the living now.
Good news is on the horizon though: we’ve attracted a new blogger: Crome. Crome is a heavy metal guru who can’t spell (but I’m the editor, so you won’t notice that). He’s been a productive (ahem) member of #english for years.
By the way, if you’re interested in blogging for 3nglish.co.uk let us know and we’ll consider your application as well. No previous experience necessary – though it does help if you’ve worked with WordPress before. I’ll explain all the niggly bits to you once you’ve signed up. Leave a comment below if you’re interested in writing for us!
Also coming up in the new year: lots of new articles and videos as well as the 3nglish podcast – this time with a proper microphone.
So, lots of big plans afoot and new things on the horizon.
Here’s a video for you to enjoy while I’m getting rid of my cold. Happy 2010 and a great decade to come for all of you.
Needless to say it reminded me of one of my favourite books of all time: 2001 A space Odyssey and its subsequent followup 2010, Odyssey Two by renowned SciFi author Arthur C. Clarke.
Giant planet Jupiter is sporting a mysterious black eye, which astronomers believe is the scar from a powerful comet or asteroid impact. The dark spot, about the size of the Earth, suddenly appeared near the planet’s south pole and resembles markings left when a disintegrating comet hit Jupiter 15 years ago.
Does this remind anyone of this?
In 2001 and 2010 monoliths are discovered all across the solar system, apparently left there by alien intelligences who want to steer the human race towards the next step in evolution. The planet Jupiter is ignited as a new sun as proof of their awesome power. Of course real life is often just as interesting, if more (pardon the pun) down to earth in it’s execution.
“It could be the impact of a comet, but we don’t know for sure yet,” said Glenn Orton, a scientist at JPL. “It’s been a whirlwind of a day, and this on the anniversary of the Shoemaker-Levy 9 and Apollo anniversaries is amazing.”
Needless to say, we’ll keep you informed of any developments or sightings of monoliths. Here’s the trailer from the movie 2001, A Space Odyssey – Directed by Stanley Kubrick.
