Wikileaks has done it again. After their stunning exposé of reporter deaths, the site has released a new flood of documents onto the internet. In their ‘Afghan War Diary’ they publish over 91000 incident reports from intelligence officers on the ground.
The reports, while written by soldiers and intelligence officers mainly describing lethal military actions involving the United States military, also include intelligence information, reports of meetings with political figures, and related detail.
What’s more, they provide a Google Earth KML link so you can view them on Google Earth. The map includes loads of reports of civilian casualties as well as accidents and other reports. Afghanistan is often referred to as ‘The Hidden War’, but no longer apparently.
Newspapers from all around the world have picked up on this instantly as the Guardian website shows. They’ve put up a Google Map with the data overlaid on it.

It is hard to say what effect the release of these documents will do to current security for the troops stationed in Afghanistan, but it’s safe to say that this will not go down well in the U.S. and the U.K., where most of the troop casualties suffered in Afghanistan are from. Ill feeling towards Pakistan is due to mount as well.
Some of the reports describe Pakistani intelligence working alongside Al Qaeda to plan attacks. Experts cautioned that although Pakistan’s militant groups and Al Qaeda work together, directly linking the Pakistani spy agency, the Directorate for Inter-Services Intelligence, or ISI, with Al Qaeda is difficult.
Whoops. That won’t go down well.
In any case, well done to Wikileaks for putting the war into perspective for us at home.
And we’re back – again. Or re-back. Or perhaps post-away. Who knows. After a short suspension (no not for pron but for not paying my bills – I know, my bad) we’re back for another year.
Just wanted to thank the anonymous support agent who so quickly answered my questions when I got online. He/She is a cool brah, brah.
I’m a bit of an amateur astronomer and there won’t be a night that goes by that I’m not sitting under the stars (if they’re out), spotting planets. I’ve been doing this for a while now and have found out some handy tips.
I find it helpful to go out on the roof and find a spot which doesn’t have direct light coming from it. The light shining out of your arsehole should be covered and preferably plugged with cement. Even if you’re in a residential area, you can still get a good bit of spotting done, provided you find a spot which has no street lights (or any direct light coming from any source preferably).
If you’re a smoker like me, cover up your eyes from the light coming off the cigarette (or whatever kind of wacky backy you’re into, man, like totally) so that when you light up and/or take a drag your eyes don’t loose their darkness vision.
Candles should also be avoided. When you’re out and about with your missus you can be tempted to make it more romantic this way. Don’t! The bitch can wait. What are you, a pussy? This is astronomy we’re talking about.
I use a number of resources to find my way around the sky. One is a really handy and above all free iPhone/iPauper Touch app which shows you the positions of the planet and stars in a horizon to horizon 3D environment. Look for it, it’s called ‘Planets’. The same app also shows the time of night when they’ll be visible and gives you a Google Earth type globe to see where the day/night border is. An added bonus is that you don’t look like a twat because nobody can see your iPhone. Make sure to turn the brightness right down though. Many a time I’ve been blinded by the screen’s luminescence and promptly fallen off the roof.
I tend to steer clear of software like google earth but one bit of software I do like is stellarium, which is an open source developed night sky app. I tried the Microsoft Silverlight and the Google Earth ones, but they don’t offer a good ground-view. And it’s FREE! Check out this screenshot from the program.
Looks cool, doesn’t it?
My last tip would be to watch Youtube channels like The Sky This Week. There’s no program comparable which deals of England or Europe because the English are a bunch of lazy cunts and expect it to rain anyway but it’s worth a watch anyway to get an idea of general events going on around you in the sky.
Here’s a video of theirs.
Well worth it isn’t it. Now, I’ll be off to have a smoke (covering it up as I observe the sky above – of course).
Just to show you guys I’m not neglecting my readers I’ve put up version 1 of the new interface. Check out the new Profiles section and the NSFW section (which I will be filling with cheap sluts tonight).
I’ve been very busy with some other projects I’ll let you in on when the time is right, but so far this is it… I promise to post more regularly though..
Also, here’s a new gallery of the stuff I collected over the week…
Security warning. The site’s been hacked! (Yes, we’re popular enough to get hacks these days. Amazing isn’t it).
We’ll be on-and-offline while I fix the security holes and check if my logs tell me anything about this attacker.
I’ll keep you all updated on the progress I’m making in cleaning up this ungodly mess.
Update:
The injection of code happened on all levels of the wordpress blog. The actual injection was of a php file on a site called firstbizhost.com, which belongs to a certain Wasinthorn Itthijinda from Bangkok.
I have little doubt he (or someone with access to his hosting provider) has had at least 48 hours to collect data so change your passwords for your accounts, even your facebook. I’m still reviewing the logs to determine how he got the php script there.
